“We gifted this set to our father-in-law last summer. It runs fine for him but gets very loud for our old man. The manufacturer must not have claimed a low running sound.”
Our Verdict

Who should buy this Machine? If you are a contractor looking for a lightweight unit for worksite or truck mounting, it is a good choice. However, it may not be a great option for residential use as it can get pretty loud at higher loads. You can also use this machine for RVs but will bother your neighbors at campsites.

DuroStar DS10000E vs. Other Generators: Compared to other generators in the same category like Champion 100110, Green Power America GPG10000EW, and Westinghouse WPro8500, DuroStar DS10000E doesn’t have any extra features. However, it is lightweight than others and offers MX2 technology. The runtime is more, but it is due to a bigger gas tank. A big tank makes the generator taller than others and may cause storage problems for some users.

If you are looking for a powerful generator, then CAT RP12000E is a reasonable option. The unit comes with a 670cc V-twin OHV engine capable of producing 15000 starting and 12000 running watts. The power output makes this machine ideal for big worksites, large homes, offices, workshops, and garages. With RP12000E, you will never feel limited in terms of power. The machine is more powerful than some of the small standby units from Generac and Champion. It is worthy to highlight that the output has a below 5% THD, making the unit an ideal fit for running sensitive appliances.

The outlets consist of four GFCI-protected 120V 20A outlets, two 120V 30A outlets, one 120/240V 30A outlet, one 120/240V 50A outlet, and one 12V DC outlet. All the outlets are rubber protected. The outlets arrangement is impressive, and you will never feel the need to connect any external extension or power cord with this machine. You can run 8 appliances at one time. • 3-year warranty
  • Excellent outlet arrangement
  • Louder machine
  • Non-CARB complaint

What customers say about CAT RP12000E?

“CAT doesn’t offer the same quality anymore. My generator stopped working after 3 months.”
“Poor customer service. I have been calling them for four months and they can’t find me an e-start button.”
“I used RP12000E to run 240V plasma cutter and high-end air compressor simultaneously and it was a joy to see the unit perform exceptionally well.”
Our Verdict

Who should buy this Machine? First of all, it is a costly machine and can’t be used in California. Secondly, CAT’s quality is now going down day by day. You can use this machine to run heavy-duty tools, power your homes during an outage, and light up your offices and workshops during an outage. If you are looking for a high-power generator, then Generac 5735 GP17500E is a way better option.

CAT RP12000E vs. Other Generators: Compared to Generac 5735 GP17500E, CAT RP12000E has a smaller tank size to runtime ratio. However, it is lightweight and compact than Generac 5735 GP17500E. We can’t forget that CAT RP12000E has a low output than Generac 5735 GP17500E, so it is not fair to compare them with each other.

Buyer’s Guide

Generator Output and Power Needs

The most important things to consider before buying a generator for a work site are the power output and your requirements. To find out the total required power, make a list of all the tools you may need to power on your generator and list the starting and running wattage. Consider the example given below.

Appliances Starting Wattage Running Wattage
Hand Drill (1-inch) 1200 1200
Circular Saw (7-1/4) 2300 1400
Air Compressor 1500 1200
Battery Charger (15 amp) 700 500
Chain Saw 1100 1100
Power Drill 900 600
Total 7700 6000

In the example above, 7700 watts are needed to start all the appliances at one time, and 6000 watts are needed to keep them running. If you were buying a generator for your home, we would suggest that a smaller generator can also work well because you don’t need to run all the appliances at once. For example, you won’t be running your microwave oven with a stove. However, when buying a generator for a construction site, you must never ignore your power needs. It is possible that you may need to run all the appliances together or may need more power according to your work. A generator with a minimum rated power of 8000 watts will run the necessary construction site tools. If you handle more significant projects, you will need more power. The best way to sort out your power requirements is to make a list of all the appliances/tools you need to run. Find out the total and leave a cushion of 800-1000 watts. It will be your total power requirement. The extra cushion will help you adjust additional loads on your generator.

Single Fuel vs. Dual Fuel Generator

The next big thing to consider is the type of fuel. If you work in developed areas with easy access to gasoline, a single fuel generator will suffice. For people working in remote areas, where it isn’t easy to find gas, a dual fuel generator is needed. It is possible that you will not be able to find gasoline somewhere but can use stored propane for emergency use. We agree that gasoline can also be stored, but it has a short shelf life (8-10 months) and is hazardous to travel within large quantities. If you are buying a dual fuel generator, please keep in mind that gas has a higher energy rating and provides more power than propane. Propane, on the other hand, is cheaper but does not burn as efficiently as gasoline. Overall, gasoline is the best fuel option for big portable generators.

Fuel Tank and Run Time

For a construction site generator, it is better to have a big fuel tank. A large fuel tank will also give you more runtime. It is advised to keep the running load equal to half of the generator’s rated power to increase the run time. All the generators on the list above come with big fuel tanks and will last 4-6 hours, depending on the load.

When you use a generator on a construction site, you will need to run it at different spots. You will also need to move your generator from one floor to another. Therefore, look for a unit that comes with all the portability features. A highly portable generator will have high-quality wheels, ergonomic carry handles, and lifting hooks. Generators for construction sites are heavy units; therefore, they must have all the portability features.

Control Panel

Look for a generator that allows full options on the control panel. A fully advanced control panel will give you features like meter readings, on/off buttons, wattage drawn, total hours run, and power outlets.

Power Outlets

Since you will be operating heavy machines on your generator, you will need outlets to connect the machines directly to the generator. It is better to check the power outlets before buying the generator and ensure that they meet your needs. If you are using power extensions with the generator, make sure they are of high quality and handle big loads.

Starting Mechanism

Buying a generator with an electric start has its perks. It will save time during work as you will not have to pull the starting cord every time you need to run your generator. Generators with dual starting options are a bit costly but are worth it.

A generator used for work purposes will need more safety features. It is more likely to get overheated, overloaded than a residential generator. Therefore, your generator must have all the features like overload and overheat protection, surge protection, low oil, and fuel shutdown. Another aspect of generator safety is covered outlets. These outlets will keep your generator safe from dust and water while running outdoors.

Automatic Idle Control

Construction tools don’t run continuously. You will be using manual tools or check the work done. You may need to arrange the materials before you start working, and it may take 10-20 minutes. Hence a generator with idle control, eco throttle, or smart throttle features will help you keep the running cost down. It will also give some rest to your generator.

Noise Rating

Construction sites are already too noisy. Hence, it would help if you looked for a generator that comes with the lowest running sound. Generators for construction sites are big units and will produce more sound than a small generator. You must also check local laws about sound pollutions. Some states limit the level of noise you can create at a work site. So, it is better to buy the quietest generator.

Warranty and Certifications

Generators at a construction site are vigorously used and are more prone to malfunctioning. It is better to buy a unit with a warranty. A warranty cover will come in handy at such times. We don’t want you to spend on maintenance within 1-2 years of buying a generator. Generators with certifications from the EPA and other regulatory bodies give you peace of mind as they are certified for not releasing pollutants into the environment. They keep the air quality breathable.

Buying a generator for professional use is like investing in your business. It will help you increase your business and enhance the operating speed of your crew. We suggest that you don’t limit your budget while buying the generator instead of looking for the most advanced and durable unit. However, it would help if you kept in mind the operational cost of the unit.

What size generator do I need for my construction tools?

The best way to calculate the generator power is to look at your tool inventory and find out the starting and running wattages. We have already explained the power calculation process in detail in the buying guide.

What are the safety protocols for running a generator on the construction site?

When running a generator on a construction site, make sure you run it under a tent. It will keep it safe from rain, sunshine, and dust. Do check these generator tents to keep your valuable machine safe. It will be best to have a generator with covered outlets.

It would help if you also took care while operating the generator. Never refuel a hot unit or a running generator. Take special care while refueling, as gasoline is highly flammable and prone to spillage. Please keep the reserve gas tanks away from sunlight and in a safe place. Make sure you keep your generator on flat ground and away from any downhill areas.

What are the maintenance needs for a large generator?

Your generator needs a timely oil change, oil/air filter replacement, spark plug inspection, battery charging, and fresh fuel for running. If you plan to store your generator for a long time, make sure you empty the fuel tank and carburetor. If you are storing fuel in the tank, remember to add a fuel stabilizer in the tank. Always cover your generator before storing it.

What’s the safe distance for running a generator on a construction site?

EPA suggests that you maintain a safe distance of at least 15 feet from the generator. It is better to increase this distance when working in the open near a generator. You can use extension cords to keep the generator away.

What’s the difference between residential use and professional use generator?

Professional generators come with heavy-duty engines with more power generation capacity and can withstand more wear and tear. They have more giant fuel tanks than residential generators, and all the models have outlet protection and lift lugs and heavy-duty wheels. The basic working principle is the same.

Is wheel kit mandatory on construction site generators?

Yes. A wheel kit along with carrying handles is mandatory for construction site generators. Without a wheel kit and carry handles, it will be impossible to move the generator on a worksite. A lifting hook will allow you to lift your generator from one floor to another floor with a crane.

Do I need to ground a generator on a construction site?

If you are running the appliances directly on a construction site, you don’t need to ground your generator. However, if you are connecting the generator to an electrical panel, it must be grounded.

What are the limitations of a construction site generator?

Construction site generators are heavy-duty units that are difficult to be moved at a workplace. You can reduce it with the help of wheels. Apart from portability issues, generators will provide limited power, regardless of the size. You may need to adjust loads to run your heavy appliances.

Final Words

With a right-sized generator, power unavailability will never be a problem for you at a worksite. You can buy a generator from the list above and make your work easy. All the units are of high quality, built to last, and can withstand heavy machines without any issues.

2 thoughts on “9 Best Generators for Construction Sites Reviews [Compared]”

  1. Terry,

I have some questions about the Westinghouse WPro8500 Industrial Portable Generator, that was reviewed at: http://voltagehero.com/best-generators-for-construction-sites/#1_Westinghouse_WPro8500_Industrial_Portable_Generator_%E2%80%93_Overall_Best

    My questions are:

Because the Smart Idle cannot be turned off, I am wondering if the generator will start an electric motor that takes 11KW to start it. The thing is, I understand Smart Idle cannot be turned off, so initially the voltage will be low and at the wrong frequency. If a small load was put on the generator, first, enough to rev up, then it would seem that there would be no problem starting the electric motor.

Also, is there a way to circumvent this problem other than a small load? Once revved up, will it immediately go down in RPM when a load is completely taken off? For instance if using a load intermittently, like a skillsaw at a job site, would the generator keep speeding up and down rapidly if the skillsaw was the only load?

Is the generator brushed or brushless?

  2. Hello, Wayne nice to see you.
First of all, Westinghouse WPro8500 is brushed not bruhsless.
The second thing is that the idle control reduces fuel consumption but it is not always a good feature. To start an electric motor you have to first apply some load on your generator to get the engine running and then put the load of the electric motor. Delays in meeting the load demands create problems. If you start the electric motor without applying any load to the generator, the delay in meeting the load requirement could lead to premature motor failure.
The engine doesn’t respond immediately when you apply or take off the load so you can easily use a skilsaw without any worries. But after turning off the skilsaw wait till the engine reduces its speed and when turning it on again, the engine will take a few seconds time to respond to that load.
